Barry Scher

Barry Scher is currently a special consultant to Giant Food as he just completed a 42 year career with the company. His prior assignment was as Vice President of Public Affairs for Giant Food Inc. As a teenager, his first job was working as a part-time staffer in Giant's former Richmond division. To gain career experience in his chosen field of public relations, he worked while attending college at the NBC-TV affiliate in Richmond and later for the Spectator Newspaper Group in Washington, D.C. as a writer. Scher holds a B.S. degree in journalism from William and Mary College's Richmond campus and also holds a Masters Certificate in public affairs from American University, Washington, D.C.

After college, Scher joined Giant full-time in 1966 as a member of the Company's newly formed Public Relations Department. He has held successive positions as Public Information Specialist, Communications Manager and Director of Giant's Communications Department. In 1977, the department took on additional responsibilities of handling legislative affairs among local, state and Federal governments and Scher was promoted to Director of Public Affairs. He was named vice president in 1987.

Today the Public Affairs Department is responsible for Giant's government relations, news media relations, philanthropic programs, community affairs and external communication programs.

Scher currently holds offices in the following organizations:

* Vice Chairman of the Board of the Capital Area Food Bank and Immediate Past Chairman for eight years
* Past Chairman and current Member of the Executive Committee, Maryland Retailers Association
* Board Member, Food For All, Inc.
* Past Chairman and current Board Member of the Executive Committee, Virginia Retail Merchants Association
* Member of the Executive Board, Delaware Food Industry Council
* Past Chairman and current Board Member of the Board of Trustees of the Treatment and Learning Centers (TLC) for Disabled Children and Adults
* Director, Montgomery County Public Schools, Educational Foundation, Inc.
* Board Member, Washington Regional Alcohol Program to prevent teen drinking and driving
* Board of Advisors, Washington Real Estate Apprentice Program

Scher has received numerous honors and awards for his leadership in business and community affairs and of special note, he was named in 2003 to the District of Columbia Hall of Fame which recognizes business and government leaders who have made positive contributions to the welfare of the city.

He and his wife Olga reside in Washington, DC.
