Hunger is a complex and multi-layered problem. It's not always obvious when someone is not able to get enough food, and there are many misconceptions about its causes and reasons. Here's a few things you probably didn't know:
40% Choose Between Food and Heat
Nearly 40 percent of clients served have to choose between buying food and paying for other living expenses like electricity or heating.
75% at Risk of Malnutrition
Approximately 75 percent of CAFB clients are classified as food insecure. This means that there is limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate foods. It may include involuntarily cutting back on meals, food portions or not knowing the source of the next meal.
50% Must Skip Meals
In our service area, Fifty (50) percent of adults are actually skipping meals because they cannot afford food.
Many Below Poverty Level
The Federal poverty level for a family of four is $22,050. Even someone who works every day at a minimum wage job earns just $15,000 a year.
Even Households with a Working Adult Need Help
Hard working people should not be forced to choose between paying rent and buying food, yet nearly half of all households receiving food assistance from the food bank have at least one working adult.
